Anti-Bullying Policy

1. Policy Statement and Commitment
Gems Aqua Stars is committed to providing a caring, friendly, and safe environment for all members to learn and train in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our swim school.


We operate as a "Telling" Club: Anyone who knows that bullying is happening—whether they are a swimmer, parent, coach, or staff member—is expected to report it immediately. All reported incidents will be dealt with promptly, effectively, and confidentially.


2. Scope and Who This Policy Applies To
This policy applies to all individuals involved with Gems Aquastars activities, including:
* Swimmers (Children and Adults)
* Coaches and Teachers
* Staff and Volunteers
* Parents/Guardians/Carers
* Spectators


This policy applies to bullying that occurs:


* At the pool or training facility (including changing rooms and spectator areas).
* During club events, trips, or competitions.
* Online or via digital communication (social media, text, email, group chats).


3. Definition and Types of Bullying
Bullying is defined as repeated, unreasonable behaviour directed towards a person or group that is intended to cause offence, anxiety, humiliation, or intimidation. It causes pain and distress to the victim.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

5. Recognising the Signs of Bullying
Coaches, staff, and parents should be aware that a swimmer may be bullied if they:
* Become withdrawn, anxious, or lack confidence.
* Are suddenly unwilling to attend lessons/training.
* Complain of feeling ill before sessions.
* Come home with damaged equipment or clothing.
* Start stammering or crying more frequently.
* Have unexplained cuts or bruises.

6. Procedures for Reporting Bullying
If you are a victim of bullying, or witness bullying, you must report it:
* Immediate Contact: Report the incident to your coach/teacher, or directly to the Welfare Officer - Gemma Pope at: (welfaregemsaquastars@gmail.com

* Parent Reporting: Parents should contact the Welfare Officer immediately if they suspect or know their child is being bullied.
* Confidentiality: All reports will be handled with strict confidentiality. No one will be penalised for reporting a concern in good faith.


7. Investigation and Resolution
Upon receipt of a report, the Welfare Officer (or appointed panel) will:
* Meet with the Complainant: Gather full details, taking minutes. (Parents will attend if the swimmer is under 18).
* Meet with the Alleged Bully: Present the allegations and allow the individual to give their view.
* Investigate: Collect evidence from witnesses (while maintaining the privacy of the complainant).
* Determine Outcome: Based on the evidence (on a balance of probability), a finding will be made.


8. Disciplinary Action and Consequences
If bullying is found to have occurred, the consequences will be fair, consistent, and proportionate. Actions may include:
* Verbal Warning: A formal warning documented by the Club.
* Behaviour Contract: Requiring the individual to sign an agreement to change their behaviour.
* Reconciliation/Mediation: A supervised meeting with the parties involved (only if safe and appropriate).
* Suspension: Temporary removal from lessons or club activities.
* Exclusion: Permanent removal from the swim school in severe or persistent cases.
